File hashes fail after tiny edits. SSCD looks at the subject and connects altered variants with their visual reference.

For a conventional file hash, two images are either perfectly identical or completely different. A new compression, a small crop or an added watermark creates a different file. Reposters know this and regularly modify copies. Protection based only on exact duplicates therefore loses visibility quickly.

Compare the subject, not the file wrapper

SSCD is a modern approach to self-supervised image representation. In practical terms, it translates an image into visual features that say more about composition and content than filename or storage format. A cropped subject may still remain close to its reference. Scaling, JPEG recompression, modest colour changes and small graphical overlays do not necessarily destroy that relationship.

Similarity needs context

A high visual score is useful but does not automatically prove infringement. Images from one series may be similar, backgrounds recur and common subjects appear across unrelated work. A mathematical neighbour becomes a relevant candidate only when the surrounding context supports it.

In practice, leaked images are often recompressed by a forum, reduced to thumbnails, placed inside collages or branded with a third-party logo. SSCD expands detection without bypassing the human decision. It is not a magic formula; it is a strong additional trace in a wider protection process.

A similarity score is strongest when other evidence points in the same direction.
